A BKF, or backup, is a computer file that contains all the backup copies of our data that we have backed up by using any backup program, such as Symantec (VERITAS) or Nt-Backup Exec. It helps us in our crucial time by restoring our data from it when a situation like data loss or data corruption occurs. The difference between Symantec Backup Exec and Nt-Backup Exec are:

  1. Symantec Backup Exec:- Symantec Backup Exec (formerly known as VERITAS) is a backup software application developed by Symantec. It is used to create system backup, Microsoft Exchange Server backup, and SQL server backup. In addition, using Symantec backup, users can compress and encrypt their backup files. The Symantec Backup Exec is highly supportable with Windows 7, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
  2. NT-Backup:- NT-Backup is a built-in backup utility program of Microsoft Windows, often known as Windows backup. Nt-Backup is available in Windows NT, 2000, XP, and Server 2003. In Windows Vista, NT-Backup was replaced by Windows Backup and Restore. To create the backup in Windows 7 by using Nt-Backup, we first need to download it from the internet. Then, we can back up our data in Windows 7.

A BKF file can be split in these situations:

  1. If you are using Nt-Backup to create a backup file and the data which you are going to backup is up to 20GB or more than it, you will need to allocate a location on your system to save the BKF file, for example, D: drive, which has a FAT file system. In such situations, your BKF file of 20GB will be split into five parts, i.e., four GB each, since FAT doesn't save a file of more than 4GB in size. Therefore, the Nt-Backup splits the BKF file into multiple parts if you save it in a drive with a FAT file system.
  2. And if you are using Symantec Backup Exec to backup your data, it will split your BKF file if the file size is more than 4GB. It doesn't matter whether you save it on any drive with the FAT file system or NTFS, just for compatibility reasons. You change this split size setting from the Backup Exec settings panel.

Compression on a BKF file is only possible using the Symantec Backup Exec Tool. It is the only backup program that supports backup compression. As we know, a backup file takes up a lot of space, especially when backing up Windows Exchange Server or an SQL Server. You can avoid such a situation by reducing the file size of BKF files. The backup files can be easily compressed if you are using Symantec Backup Exec. However, restoring data from a compressed BKF file becomes very difficult if it gets corrupted since most BKF recovery software does not support the recovery of compressed BKF files. In such a situation, you can use the Backup Exec BKF Repair software of SysInfoTools to recover your data from the corrupt BKF file which is compressed.

To create a backup file by using Symantec Backup Exec, you need to follow these simple steps:

Procedure First to create a backup file

  • Open Symantec Backup Exec on your system.
  • On the Backup and Restore tab > select Backup > Backup to Disk.
  • Please wait until the running process is completed
  • A window Backup Properties will appear; click on Edit.
  • On the left pane, click, and select the drive and the data you want to backup.
  • Now on the right pane, click on Edit.
  • A new window, Backup Options, will appear.
  • Select all the desired options from Backup Options.
  • Now click on OK.

Procedure Second to create a backup file

  • On the Storage tab > select Configure Storage
  • Please wait while the default information is loading
  • Now select the type of storage you want to configure: Disk-Based Storage, network, Tape Storage, and Storage Tools.
  • For example, select Disk-Based Storage and click on Next.
  • Click on Disk Storage and then Next.
  • Now on the right pane, click on Edit.
  • Type any name of Disk Storage and click on Next.
  • Select the location where you want to create the Disk Storage Device, and click on Next.
  • Click on Finish.

Here is the list of some common error messages or indications which take place at the time of BKF file corruption:

  • "Backup Exec 11d e000fe36- Corrupt data encountered".
  • Corrupt, bad, unknown scratch media in the deduplication folder/OST Appliance, causing jobs to queue long.
  • "CRC error" takes place while opening or extracting a BKF file.
  • Backup Exec fails to perform a backup operation and encounters corrupt files.

Since technology grows as data grows, too, our BKF Recovery software is programmed to handle several terabytes of files. Theoretically, it can also handle several petabytes of BKF files, but this would be a far cry as, even in today's scenario, such gigantic files are very few. So, you can assure that there is no file size limitation for the software.

You can utilize the snapshot feature of the software to save the scanning process of a file, which can load in the full version right away, and you need not rescan the BKF file again once you purchase the full version. However, make sure you do not move the original BKF file path as the original path is stored in the snapshot file, and even slight changes in the file path make this snapshot feature useless.
